The TV series is based only on the first 11 volumes of the manga, with subsequent story arcs produced as DVD OVA series. The series is directed by Besides the fact that I personally liked them, for those who watched the 1999 version this was an incredible raising of the stakes to kill off characters you've known for two decades. 2011 version didn't just have that level of character care due to how rushed the hunter exam was. And then of course, came the biggest bombshell of them all.

In the 1999 version, the scene where Zeno is chasing Chrollo with his dragon, the action is slowed down and mostly shown from this one distant angle, and the 'camera' stays there for like 15 seconds. In the 2011 version, the 'camerawork' is much more dynamic imo, with us getting a very good sense of Chrollo's agility and Zeno's aura control.
Hunter x Hunter 1999 soundtrack. 8 times out of 10 when some body says 1999>2011 in my experience they will bring up the soundtrack. I however think it's terribly over hyped. It's not bad by any means, but there's not much that stands out for me until the the Greed Island music.
